Trekking to Aconcagua Base Camp

In this expedition we will visit the Plaza de Mulas camp, over 4,350 meters high and try the ascent to Cerro Bonete, 5,050 m.

In order to conserve natural and cultural values ​​of the area, Aconcagua Provincial Park was declared in 1983 with 71,000 hectares.

The importance of this park is of it is located in the imposing frame of the Andes Central holding inside priceless heritage wealth.

The protected area has one of the most valuable natural resources of the planet, fresh water, which is contained in glaciers and headwaters. Another value is vital plant and animal diversity housing, example is Las Vegas its variety and productivity are one of the fundamental bases of sustaining trophic altoandina. Undoubtedly, the Cerro Aconcagua (6962m) which gives its name to the reserve, is the main attraction being the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere.

Depart: Day 7 – 6.30 p.m.

Details of the Itinerary:

Day 1 – Mendoza City – Penitentes.

In this first day we have our meeting in Mendoza Airport. Then we will go to our accommodation in the city to check the personal equipment. If necessary, we will go to a rental shop. After that, we will go to the Aconcagua Park Office to get the ascent permits and we will talk about the development of the expedition. From our accommodation, we will have transportation to Penitenes. 

Day 2 – Penitentes – Horcones – Confluencia.

After breakfast, we will go to the Horcones Valley 2.950 m Here we get our climbing permits stamped at the rangers check point and begin the approach to Confluencia camp. After a relaxed hike we arrive at the camp, Confluencia 3460 m. For the hike you will be carrying only a day pack with some essentials, as the mules take care of the heavy duties. 

Day 3 – Confluencia – South Face Aconcagua Viewpoint – Confluencia

After breakfast, we will start our trek to South Face Aconcagua Viewpoint 4.000 m We will see a giant wall that stands 3,000 meters above us, really impressive. From this place, Aconcagua appears more magnificent and intimidating than ever. We can see the entire South Wall. We’ll trek for about 5 hours. We will back to Confluencia Camp. 

Day 4 – Confluencia – Plaza de Mulas

After breakfast, we start our walk across “Playa Ancha” . We slowly gain altitude up to the Horcones Superior Valley. After hiking across Playa Ancha and climbing up through a very steep path, “Cuesta Brava” (meaning Rugged Slope), we reach Plaza de Mulas, at 4.250 m.  

Day 5 –  Plaza de Mulas

Rest day in Plaza de Mulas, at 4.250 m. This day will be to know the Plaza de Mulas camp. You can visit the tallest Art Gallery in the World (World Guiness Record.) The immediate vicinity of the camps, with the incredible view of the Western Wall of Aconcagua, the Horcones Superior Glacier and Cerro Cuerno.

Day 6 –  Ascent to Mt. Bonete

After breakfast we strat the ascent to Mt Bonete’s summit.  From this mountain we´ll see the awesome Aconcagua west face, as well the huge Plaza de Mulas’ Base Camp. The surrounding landscape it’s amazing, you could admire the vast expanse of the Andes. Then we return to Plaza de Mulas. 

Day 7 – Plaza de Mulas – Penitenes – Mendoza

Descent to Penitenes. Transportation to Mendoza. Accommodation. End of our services.

Recommended clothing:

Pants

One pair of pants suitable for walking. We recommend trekking pants.

One pair of winter / insulated base layers to be worn under the trekking pants.

Sweatshirt

Two. We recommend polar fleece due to its benefits.

Socks

two pairs of mountaineering socks.

T-shirts

One insulated base layers T-shirts.

2 t-shirts for walking. We recommend synthetic fibers.

1 cotton t-shirt to be worn in the afternoons and evenings when we are out of activities.

Coats

1 waterproof jacket.

1 windbreaker (it can be the waterproof jacket).

1 warm Jacket. degree duvet jacket.

Shoes

1 pair of trekking shoes.

We recommend a light pair of shoes to let feet rest such as Crocs® or similar.

Accessories for sun and cold protection

The service includes:

Meals: all the meals from lunch at Day 1 to lunch at Day 7.

Accommodation: 1 night at mountain refuges in Penitenes. 5 nights in  dormitory domes (4 or 8 persons).

Guides from MONS – Actividades de Montaña. Professional Guides – registered by the Province of Mendoza, with specific qualification in First Response in wild areas.

The service does not include:

Unspecified extra meals or drinks.

Accommodation before and after the expedition is borne by the excursionists. It is strongly advised booking in advance. 

Transfer to Mendoza. 

Individual equipment and clothing. 

Travel insurance, medical evacuation insurance.

Access permits to Parque Aconcagua. 

Occasional expenses due to eventual abandonment of the program.

Tips, phone calls, Internet and showers in Parque Aconcagua.

Contracting Conditions

The trip can be cancelled by the company due to causes beyond the organizers’ control: when the safety cannot be guaranteed due to weather conditions or other reasons; o because the minimum number of participants could not be reached. The tripper can choose between a new date of departure or full refund.

Tourism in wild areas has characteristics that make it stand out of conventional tourism. Logistics is particular due to its complexity and the proposals depend on factors that may alter its normal development. That is why the entire schedule may vary even though the whole trip has been carefully planned.

The guides who are in charge of the activity may modify totally or partially the itinerary when they consider that one or more participants’ physical or psychological integrity is at risk or due to weather conditions or security reasons.

The guides firstly guarantee the participants’ safety and are present during the whole trip.
